Exterior Wood Shutters
Everyone Wants Exterior Wood Shutters!
Exterior wood shutters, as the name indicates, are the shutters which are often hanged from the outside of a window and are made of wood. It protects the room from direct hot sunlight, annoying flying debris that causes damage to the things inside the room, heavy rains that tries to enter the room and spoil the things by its moisture, wind and storm that carries dust and strikes in through the windows. If the window is fully closed one can suffer without proper ventilation for air and light. This is where louver helps. Louvers can be operated in modern days to control the amount of light and air entering through the window into the room. They are called operable louvers. There are also fixed louvers, which do not give us any control on the louver as we wish, they are first evolved louvers. They are outdated after the discovery of operable louvers. However still in some olden buildings fixed louvers can be found. However, when exterior shutters are made of wood, it is necessary that the quality of the wood must be checked before using it to construct an exterior shutter. Wood is easily spoilt by external weather conditions like rain, sunlight, insects etc. so one must be very careful while selecting the wood for constructing exterior wood shutters. The two main kinds of wood used for construction are hardwood and softwood. Hardwood is obtained from angiosperm trees whereas softwood is obtained from coniferous trees. Hardwood is obtained from broad leaved trees whereas softwood is obtained from narrow leaved trees. Some of the hardwoods that are used to make exterior wood shutters are teak, Spanish cedar and Honduran Mahogany. They have the property of breathing out moisture. This property makes them to highly resist the phenomena of rotting and decay. The exterior wood shutters made with softwoods like pine are highly prone to decay and rot. This is because they are easily affected by external weather conditions like heavy rain and hot sunlight. It is always better to use hardwoods to build exterior wood shutters because the durability is high when compared to the exterior wood shutter made with softwoods. Hardwoods have tannin in them. Tannin is an astringent. It is a plant polyphenol that shrink proteins. Both angiosperms and gymnosperms have tannin in them. The astringency in the tannin makes it to cause dryness. Since hardwoods have tannins in them, they are highly resistive to moisture. Thus it is always better to use hardwoods in order to extend or increase the life of an exterior wood shutter. A type of exterior wood shutter that can be directly screwed to the building easily is called Non-functional exterior wood shutter. Another type of exterior wood shutter is hurricane shutter. It is otherwise called storm shutter. It is designed to face heavy rains and strong winds. It acts like a security gate. It is controlled with motors for making the opening and closing easy. Nowadays it is a fact that hurricane shutters are replaced with plastic instead of wood. |
